On 19 May 1902, an explosion inside the Fraterville mine near Briceville, Anderson County, TN, killed an estimated 216 men and boys.  One hundred eighty four were identified.  Their names are listed below and on the central monument in Miner's Circle, Leach Cemetery.  Eleven fathers along with one or more of their sons were killed.  Many widows and orphans were left.  The names below are listed as they were shown on the original memorial pamphlet.  The information in parentheses following some of the names was added on the 100th anniversary pamphlet.  African-American miners are numbered 174-184.

Who were the Fraterville miners?  The oldest known miner was John REDICK, who was 57 years old.  The youngest known miner was Henry WHITTEN, who was 12 years and 27 days old.  There was one set of twins - J. Luke and William Luther LEACH.  Follow the links from each miner's name to read about him.  I welcome any additional information or corrections to the information about any of the miners.
Please write me.  I will add to and/or correct the information in the miners' records.
